Meet Tom Shima - Senior Sales Executive at MemberSuite

Meet Tom Shima - Senior Sales Executive at MemberSuite

What’s your position at MemberSuite?

I’m a Senior Sales Executive at MemberSuite. I’m based in the DC office and am fortunate to be within blocks of so many customers, and hundreds of potential customers. My main goal is to be a trusted advisor for prospective customers and to help them reach the best conclusions on their association management software needs.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from a swell farm in Iowa - those who have spoken to me can tell from my “neutral” accent. When it came time to move away for college, I went to Jackson Mississippi to attend Millsaps College, which is the same college most of my mother’s family attended. After college, I worked in several different states New York, Washington DC, and Delaware, before I eventually landed back in DC near the dawn of the internet age.

How did you get into sales?

Needless to say, I did not go to college to major in sales. I actually majored in sociology with a minor in fine arts. With my academic background, I landed my first job in NYC at CBS News to work on “election field research” for the 88 presidential election. Afterwards, I moved to DC and wandered into sales. I have been with it ever since!

What should we know about you?

If anyone is familiar with Strengths Finder, my top five strengths are Empathy, Positivity, Maximizer, Developer, and Includer. While a total extrovert, I can still be kind of shy at first, but once I open up, I become the life of the party. In a professional setting, I tend to sit back and listen to what others have to say. I thrive on learning from other perspectives. My best ideas come from conversations and exchanging thoughts with others.

What is one of your hobbies?

CrossFit. Those who know me know how much I enjoy crossfit because I get to challenge and push myself to new limits!

What is your favorite project you’ve worked on at MemberSuite?

I joined the team in November, so I’m still learning the ropes. However, one of the most fun and rewarding projects took place in the Atlanta office during the first week of January when the sales team came together to collaborate and share insights on the Event Farm technology and ways it can help the non-profit market.

What is the best part of working at MemberSuite?

The people. When it comes time to leave one place and go to another, it’s always a bit nerve-wracking, especially for someone like me that’s been in the AMS space for 10 years and has been fortunate to work with and build relationships with many great people and companies. However, all those feelings went away when I first spent the day with the MemberSuite team and learned about the product and company. I am grateful to be here!

Anything else you'd like to share?

I’m not a huge TV fan, but darn Netflix for making it so easy to get hooked! Past favorites have been “Man in the High Castle,” “The Americans”, ”The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Designated Survivor.” Feel free to send any series suggestions my way.
